The Library & Information Centre, as a SPECIAL RESEARCH LIBRARY was established by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (GOVT. OF INDIA), New Delhi in 1978 to collect, store and preserve the special type of valuable scattered literature in the UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE. It endeavors to acquire process, organize and disseminate global information in the field of its specialization among the medical community in general and research staff of the council in particular. Since 1979, it is moving steadily towards achieving its goal.

The catalogue of the Library has been computerized and can be accessed through OPAC in the Library as well as via LAN (Local Area Network) at the Headquarter and it can be also access through DELNET. In the field of Library Automation, LIC is using FoxPro, multi-user package SOUL (Software for University Library) prepared by INFLIBNET (UGC), Ahmedabad and TROODON. Web-OPAC Facilities is being shortly started through TROODON for bibliographical search at any corner of the world via WAN (Wide Area Network) system. Urdu software “InPage” is also being used. E-Journals can also be accessed through Info Trac Medical Consortia (I-Med C) and Health & Wellness Research Consortia (HWRC).

Library & Information Centre is a regular Global subscriber of WHO (World Health Organization) publications since 1996. It has institutional membership of Medical Library Association of India (MLAI), British Council Library, American Library and Developing Library Network (DELNET) since 1997.

Library is actively engaged in the work of digitization and preservation of Manuscripts of Unani System of Medicine. Its membership is open to Technical Experts and Research staff of the Council. However, on special request, outside research scholars are also entertained.




Library & Information Centre has a rich collection of valuable material in shape of books, e-books, thesis, dissertations, back volumes of journals, periodicals, newsletters, WHO monographs, technical and annual reports, encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesaurus, glossaries, CDs, floppies, charts, maps, microfilms, audio/video cassettes etc. on Traditional, Alternative, Indian, Herbal,  Modern Medicines and Allied Sciences etc. It possesses rare original manuscripts, rare books, photocopies and scanned copies of rare books and manuscripts in Arabic, Persian and Urdu in the field of UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE. It has a valuable collection of back volumes of Unani Journals also.

These specialized services are being provided by the highly qualified and well trained staff in the field of Library & Information Science. Besides the above specialized services, Library & Information Centre provides other routine services of a library such as lending of books and other material to its members through its circulation desk.
